A poll.

Woman talking on her cell phone while in the bathroom stall, with noises indicating that she was simultaneously doing that mundane thing we typically use bathroom stalls for, namely peeing:

(a) Weird as hell, or  (b) “get with the times, Pseudo, everyone does that now”?

Not only weird as hell, but disrespectful as hell. We have a bathroom at work we share with other offices. And some of the employees of said offices are always on their phones while doing who knows what in there. I now take the long way to another restroom to avoid becoming part of someone’s phone call.

    Weird. Very weird. Urgh.

  3. Green says:

Not weird so much as totally gross.

    In a public bathroom? Gross!

  5. Ok, let me preface my answer with a statement: I do not talk on cell phones in public bathrooms.

That said, there are some cases in which the activity would just be gross. But I think that the primary thing that makes this phenomenon so incredibly weird is that it shatters the illusion that every one of us constructs and struggles to maintain against all odds in a public restroom: that we are, in fact, alone while doing our business, and not surrounded by other (bizarre) people.

I thought about that a little too deeply, I believe.

  6. Sadly, I’ve been noticing this for the last few years, so I have to say “get with the times.” I find it really disturbing and even a little violating – it’s one thing if a person decides to pee while on the phone. However, I think I should be asked permission before someone talks on the phone in the stall next to me while *I* am peeing.

I often have the urge to make really disgusting bathroom noises in order to dissuade this behavior, but that would embarrass me too much.

There’s a senior manager in a certain “Firm” I know who, after finding out that the reason her peon didn’t answer her Crackberry was because said peon was in the bathroom, reminded her team that the expectation was that the phone go with you.

  8. That is gross. I can’t stand people who take their cell phones everywhere. Is nothing private anymore? Seriously.

Also, I’ve gone private. Email me if you’d like an invite :)

Weird. And rude. Probably more rude than weird.
