Pressing work-related question.

When one is wearing a long-sleeved dress shirt, tucked into pants or a skirt, how does one prevent it from puffing out all weird and creating the impression of a serious beer gut when one sits down?  And how does one avoid having to constantly having to readjust/shove it back down into one’s waistband?  Because I think the whole stand up shove shove shove adjust adjust adjust routine I’ve got going on over here is compromising my efforts to appear professional in meetings.

(No, seriously, how? I need tips! I feel like I have failed some sort of “Professional Attire 101″ course over here.)

I think I heard once you are actually supposed to tuck it in while sitting down.

  2. Christina says:

I tuck the shirt into my pantyhose or tights if I am wearing them. Then I gently puff it out a wee bit.

    Hope that this helps!

Coming from the girl who wears t-shirts and fleeces to work everyday, I’m not sure I’m the person who should be giving you advice. =)

  4. I, too, have no freakin’ clue so I am taking notes.

But really, while I agree the stand-up-and-tuck thing isn’t that great to watch all the time, neither is the stand-up-button-sit-down-unbotton thing the guys have with their suit jackets. We all get screwed somehow when dressed professionally IMO.

Hmmmm…are you sure you have the right size?

Also, you can get away with wearing a shorter dress shirt that doesn’t need to be tucked in if you either wear a camisole or tshirt underneath it or a fitted jacket over it.

I really don’t know. I have no idea. But I love how you phrased this question. You = hilarious.

  7. Lacey Bean says:

I don’t tuck shirts in. That solves that dilemma! Haha

  8. Had I worn the button-down I wore today with pants, I would’ve posed the same question, because, I have NO. FREAKIN’. IDEA.

But, I wore it with a skirt and a v-neck sweater, so I let it peek out the bottom of the sweater.

Personally, I’d rather worry about ‘stand up button sit down unbutton’.

Barring some kind of freaky grampa-style garter sitch, CAN’T BE DONE. At least as far as I know. I guess if you’re wearing a skirt you pin it to the inside, but that won’t work with pants. You know, for PEEING reasons.

  10. I think you need to go with a shorter shirt, or not tuck it in and wear a jacket, or soemthing. I don’t wear shirts unless under something else; by themselves they always look messy on me.

I TOTALLY think they should make onesies for grown-ups.

  12. Alice says:

i have NO IDEA. my torso apparently is the wrong size, and those shirts are never long enough for me to tuck in in the first place.

  13. I totally do not tuck in shirts anymore for this very same reason. I just can’t do it. I don’t have a chest to speak of, and I hate the thought that my shirt puffs out more than my chest. This is also why I don’t wear belts either.

My clothing issues: let me show them to you!

  14. This is precisely why I do not generally wear long-sleeved dress shirts!

I just found your blog and really can’t believe that this is the post that got me to de-lurk :) Having battled this forever, I finally found the answer – tailoring. If you have the shirt fitted so that there’s only a couple inches of “wiggle room” around the middle you’ll never have the tuck-in issue again… totally worth the $10 it costs to have tailored :)
