Earth Day CONTEST! Which I almost forgot about, because I rule!

So, hey, today is Earth Day!  And for weeks, I’d been plotting a little Earth Day contest for you peeps, and then I went and forgot to post it, and now I’m at my office, where I have no camera to take photos of the prize, and where I should probably not technically be writing on my blog during work hours.

Briefly, then, here is the deal: as you might remember, I have taken up sewing.  Much like when I took up knitting and John and I ended up with like 15 hand-knit hats each, we are rapidly approaching our house’s saturation point for hand-sewn items that are within my skill level.  But I still want to sew!

So I’ve decided to sew something for an Earth Day contest.  I am giving away two hand-sewn picnic mats, complete with reusable plastic utensils.   I will update this post with actual photos of the actual items when I get home, but they look like this:

(Tomato not included.)  The mat rolls up and ties with  ribbon, making it easily portable for picnics:

These are a great way to cut down on the use of paper napkins and disposable utensils.  And they’re not just for picnics: I bring mine to work and use it as a placemat when I have to eat work at my desk (which is often).  I actually put regular old metal flatware in it so I can feel like I’m eating with real utensils instead of plastic.  Using a proper fork somehow makes eating at one’s desk feel a little less sad.

So! I have TWO picnic mats to give away to one lucky winner (perfect for use on a romantic spring outing.)  They are made with this gorgeous fabric:

If you’d like to win this set of two picnic placemats (and I know you do,) just leave a comment on this post.  If you’d like, tell me about your favorite spot to take a picnic.  (That’s not required to win, but I would like to hear about everyone’s favorite picnic places anyway!)

Contest will remain open until 5pm CDT on Friday, April 24, and the winner will be randomly selected.

Happy picknicking, and Happy Earth Day!

  1. Oooh! Oooooh! Pick me! Pick me! I have a small collection of your handmade goodness and would love something to not be for Theo :-) Mama needs so pseudo love too! We actually have a picnic/Ravinia set that this would go perfectly with. And I’d have to say that that is my favorite spot to picnic–surrounded by fabulous music.

How fun! I don’t know yet where I like to picnic in Denver, but I want to find out!

Those are awesome! My neighborhood has outdoor movie nights once a week in the summer and picnic dinners are encouraged… these would be perfect for that!

  4. Cheryl says:

Pick me! :) I eat at my desk at work nearly every day, and this would spruce it up quite nicely.

My favorite picnic spot is Central Park.

    Hi!

Jack and I love going to Golden Gate Park in SF and do a picnic/BBQ. We’ll take his small little grill, grab some meat and veggies and grill them in the park. It’s one of the few parks that we found that allows grills AND alcohol. We’ll probably do a couple of those this summer before school starts for me. :)

    Happy Earth Day!

  6. Ooh – what a great idea! I’m envious of your mad sewing skillz.

My favorite place to picnic is in my car (during the winter – ha) or while camping (spreading out a nice blanket instead of using the bird poop-encrusted picnic tables).

  7. Katie says:

Those are so pretty! Love the fabric.

I live right near Washington Square Park in Chicago, and I’ve been looking forward to picnicing there once the weather gets warmer.

  8. Korinna says:

I would love a snazzy placemat with little slots for tableware!

I’m not a huge picnic-er, but I am a fan of eating and that’s 50% of it, right?

  9. Iheartgreen says:

Yay for contests. There’s an outdoor patio (repetitive?) across from the office that we go to eat at when eating at our desks becomes too depressing. It happens once every 3 months or so–but fun when it does. (Note: eating at our desks is depressing almost every day, we just get very little opportunity to be away from our computers when the market is open.)

I’m not going to lie – I don’t picnic. I do, however, eat at my desk almost every day. These would be perfect.

  11. KT says:

What a great idea for the office!!! I keep disposable utensils in my desk and clean them every day, but your utensils look much cuter!!

  12. Renee G says:

Our favorite picnic spot is on our lawn swing on the back porch.

dc is rife with picnicking spots. so basically: anywhere downtown that involves grass. the mall! one of the parks! the monuments!

ps – um, i’m worried about your finger. is it better?

Earth day is an interesting event wherein there will only be an empty road free from cars.
