I need music to run, particularly ouside. If I do not have music, I focus even more on all the things I’d rather be doing than running (for example: sleeping, eating chocolate chip cookies, flossing.) As I mentioned in my last post, some songs passed the “10K test”; others did not.
10K worthy:
- I Love Rock ‘n Roll, Joan Jett
- Dirt Off Your Shoulder, Jay-Z
- Boom Boom Pow, Black Eyed Peas
- Titus Andronicus, Titus Andronicus
- Ruby, Kaiser Chiefs
- Whatever You Like, TI
- The 59 Sound, Gaslight Anthem
- Song Away, Hockey
- Twist, Frightened Rabbit
- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel
- The Seed (2.0), The Roots
- The Underdog, Spoon
- Troublemaker, Weezer
- Paper Planes, MIA
Kicked off the playlist (good songs, all, they just weren’t getting it done for me during the long run):
- Universal Mind Control, Common
- Should’ve Said No, Taylor Swift (Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking either)
- My Doorbell, White Stripes
My problem now is I’m getting to a point where I’m really used to hearing all the songs on my running playlist, and need some new ones. Suggestions? Please? I like all kinds- hip hop, rock, goopy pop, cheesy country- as long as it’ll keep me running, I’m open.
Yay! I love posts like these. I get so many good ideas.
My current running playlist (which I don’t run to, by the way, because I am lazy) is this:
- Cobrastyle by Robyn
- Paralyzer by Finger Eleven
- Dragula by Rob Zombie
- Mr. Miracle Mile by Jason Shannon (I used to work with him; a great musician!)
- Human by The Killers
- Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra
- Viva La Vida by Coldplay
- Belt Loops by The Films
- Holding out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler
- Die Hard by Guyz Nite (they parody the “Die Hard” movies – hilarious AND catchy!)
- Good Day by The Films
That’s all I can remember from memory. These all have fast beats, which I consider key for running.
Tango Shoes by Bif Naked
One Pure Thought by Hot Chip
Mr. Brightside by the Killers
We Come by Faithless
Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio
Henrietta by the Fratellis
You Don’t Love Me by the Kooks
New Born by Muse
Filthy/Gorgeous by the Scissor Sisters
Dancing Shoes by Arctic Monkeys
Poker Face by Lady GaGa
Ladylike by Big Wreck
Stronger by Kanye West
Vice by Razorlight
Help I’m Alive by Metric
Time is Running Out by Muse
So What by Pink
Head Will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
My favorites to work-out by are:
Seven Nation Army by White Stripes
That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings
When I Grow Up by The Pussycat Dolls
I also may or may not have been known to run to Dolly Parton.
Thanks for posting about this, I would like to read more about this topic.
I did my own list about a month ago- you can find my favs here: http://nonsequiturchica.blogspot.com/2009/05/workout-music.html
Nice mix of songs and comments. I just recently posted a list of over 4 hrs of music for runners based on their running pace. The songs have a faster Beats Per Minute (BPM) so you don’t subconsciously slow down to the beat of a song. Includes The Kills, Gorillaz, White Stripes, Kooks, Strokes, Cure, Black Eyed Peas, Arctic Monkeys, etc. Check it out at:

Disturbia by Rihanna is my latest favorite
Also–these are great running songs but oh so embarassing to admit:
Dirty Pop by N’Sync
Cinderalla by Britney Spears
a few faves:
the pretender – foo fighters
keep your eyes ahead – the helio sequence
pain/a praise chorus/if you don’t, don’t/ – jimmy eat world
stronger – kanye west
no culture icons/how we know/pillar of salt – the thermals
date with the night/tick/black tongue – yeah yeah yeahs
the way it is – the strokes
I echo an earlier commenter’s suggestion of “That’s Not My Name” by the Ting Tings, and add my other current favorite: “Get Back” by Ludacris. It’s the song Tom Cruise dances to over the ending credits of Tropic Thunder.
And if you’d like to take a little ride in the Wayback Machine of Bad Pop, Christina Aguilera’s “Stronger” is always a good workout tune.
Or was it called “Fighter”? I don’t remember. Just whatever Christina Aguilera song was NOT about a genie in a bottle, NOT about French prostitutes, and NOT a ballad from the movie Mulan.
I love that Roots song, even though it’s pretty different from most of their music.
If you’re up for something different, check out our running music: http://www.hellasound.com. Original, high-intensity, 30-minute songs available in a range of BPM to sync to your stride.
Another great song which might be in your musical taste is Stone Temple Pilot’s “Interstate Love Song”. It was the first song that really resonated with me for running.
